The brief
School sport can be a powerful platform for young people's development, but its impact depends on more than the activities delivered. It requires a capable workforce, meaningful opportunities for young volunteers and provision that reaches those who face barriers to participation.
The challenge was to strengthen these connected elements while ensuring that school sport competitions supported wider educational and community priorities.
What we focused on
Developing the workforce
Supporting existing practitioners to strengthen their knowledge, skills and capacity to deliver quality school sport.
Creating opportunities for young people
Developing pathways for young volunteers to gain experience, build confidence and develop transferable skills.
Widening access to sport
Improving opportunities for girls and disabled young people to participate in school sport and competition.
Connecting competition to wider outcomes
Positioning school sport within three connected agendas: education, health and employment.
The wider value
This approach demonstrates how school sport can serve as more than a competition programme. With the right workforce, partnerships and pathways, it can support educational engagement, healthier communities, inclusive participation and future employment opportunities.
Athleon's perspective
The lesson is strategic: sustainable sport development requires investment in people and systems, not simply activities. When workforce development, inclusion and competition are designed together, school sport can create value across multiple public priorities.

“
A strong school sport system should do more than organise competitions. It should develop people, widen participation and create opportunities that benefit young people beyond the playing field.
