The challenge
Sport serves different purposes at different stages of life. It can introduce children to physical activity, provide young people with coaching and development opportunities, support talented athletes in progressing towards higher levels of performance, and help adults maintain active lifestyles.
The challenge is to connect these opportunities rather than treat grassroots participation, talent development, school sport and elite performance as separate worlds.
The approach
My experience across talent scouting, community coaching and physical education provided different perspectives on the sporting pathway: identifying potential, developing skills through coaching, and helping young people build positive relationships with sport through education.
Together, these perspectives highlight the importance of accessible entry points, quality coaching, appropriate development opportunities and pathways that recognise different ambitions and abilities.
What this means
A connected sporting pathway can serve more than one purpose. It can help talented participants progress, create meaningful opportunities for young people to develop their skills, and encourage wider participation beyond competitive performance.
It also reinforces the importance of inclusive opportunities for girls, disabled participants and people who may face barriers to taking part.
Where it stands
The strategic lesson is that participation and performance should reinforce one another. Strong community foundations can widen the pool of participants, while appropriate development pathways can help individuals progress without losing sight of the wider value of sport.
The lesson
Sport should not be measured by elite success alone. A strong system creates routes for those who aspire to compete at the highest level and meaningful opportunities for everyone else to remain active.
The objective is a sporting pathway that connects participation, potential and lifelong physical activity.

“
A strong sport ecosystem creates opportunities at every level, from local participation to elite performance while helping more poeple lead healthier more active lives.
