The brief
Across Africa, investment in sporting infrastructure, events and facilities presents an important opportunity for development. But expansion brings environmental challenges: energy consumption, water scarcity, waste management and the long-term cost of maintaining facilities. Too often, sustainability is considered after the investment has been made, rather than built into the original decision. The challenge is to ensure that sporting development creates lasting value without placing unnecessary pressure on local resources and communities.
What we did
Athleon developed a strategic framework to integrate environmental sustainability into the planning and management of sporting infrastructure, programmes and events. This included identifying opportunities for renewable energy, efficient water management, responsible waste practices and more sustainable procurement. The approach also considered local operating capacity, institutional responsibility and the importance of involving communities and local partners in delivery.
What changed
Sustainability became part of the wider investment and development conversation. Environmental considerations were connected to financial planning, infrastructure design, operational efficiency and long-term organisational priorities. This created a clearer basis for assessing how sporting investment could reduce environmental impact while supporting local skills, employment and enterprise.
Where it stands
A framework for more resilient sporting infrastructure and responsible development. One that recognises Africa's environmental challenges not simply as constraints, but as an opportunity to shape a more sustainable model of sporting investment.

“
Environmental sustainability should not be an afterthought. It must be built into how sport is funded, delivered and managed.
